![]() ![]() ![]() Maclean was a spy who loved and loathed the role. A sworn enemy of capitalism, he had access to some of the greatest secrets of the time, transmitting invaulable intelligence to his Soviet handlers on the atom bomb and the shape of the postwar world. He was prone to alcoholic binges that should have blown his cover, yet they never found their way onto his record. He married an American woman despite his sexual ambivalence and increasing antipathy to the United States. A model diplomat, he rose through the ranks of the British Foreign Office rapidly, never arousing suspicion of his chilling double life. Maclean became infatuated with Communism during his school days, even before his time at Cambridge. Roland Philipps unravels Maclean's character and contradictions, informed by a domineering father in a childhood at once liberal and austere. Drawing on a wealth of previously classified files and unseen family papers, A Spy Named Orphan meticulously documents his extraordinary story. ![]() Donald Maclean was one of the most treacherous spies of the Cold War era and a key member of the infamous "Cambridge Five" spy ring, yet the full extent of this shrewd, secretive man's betrayal has never been explored-until now. ![]() ![]() ![]() Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. This story was originally the collection of three separate manuscripts addressed to different persons in 1895, 1896, and 1897. It became a spiritual classic, read by millions, and was translated from French into other languages. The manuscript in a highly edited form was first published in 1898 and praised by readers. Manuscript & ReadersIn fits and starts during her spare time St. Thérèse saw the way of spiritual childhood as the path which led to eternal life. The translated version however offered clear themes of love, abandonment to God’s mercy, and mission in the church. Students of hers were still able to read texts in the original manuscript. The facsimile edition of her manuscript was difficult to read because of capitalizations, underlined words, size, position of slant letters, with occasional corrections. Still this story was not meant to be a sequel to Undivided, it’s more like a bonus and all in all, I enjoyed diving back into one of my favourite universes again. ![]() ![]() I liked the stories that we were given but at the same time, it would have been nice to get some new stories about our protagonists. The only thing I was slightly disappointed in, was that there was no short story about Connor, Risa wasn’t the main focus in the story that she was in and there was no new story about Lev. I was obviously incredibly excited to read this book, because I love the Unwind universe so much, but also a little nervous because I don’t always love short stories and Undivided was so incredibly perfect, that I wasn’t sure that this collection of short stories was entirely necessary, but I am glad to say, that whilst it’s not my favourite book from this universe, I did enjoy it and felt that most of the stories did add something to the universe. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments The good thieves book![]() ![]() That's just one of the stories in a book that manages to feel like it could have been written by multiple authors and yet has a single, controlling intelligence. ![]() Folks, I made the same sound while reading "The She-Wolf and Saint Edmund" by Coy Hall. These thought experiments can become central to the conversation between philosophers, and new versions can be used as part of the response. The research for my novel Love And Other Thought Experiments formed part of my PhD on the overlap between philosophy and literature in the short stories known as “thought experiments.” The thesis was a study of the history and development of the story-cycle and the composite novel which overlaps in the way that philosophers, particularly philosophers of mind, create a narrative for an idea or theory. Multiple narrator remains my storytelling technique of choice, as a reader and a writer. Books such as Middlemarch, Frankenstein, and Wuthering Heights fed my already over-exercised imagination to the point where reality and fantasy were occasionally indistinguishable. The multiple narrator is such a prominent feature of 19th-century fiction that it’s possible I internalized the device inadvertently. In my teens, I read only Victorian novels. ![]() 6/8/2023 0 Comments Thor aaron omnibus![]() ![]() Which makes it a terrible time for the Odinson to be rendered unworthy of lifting Mjolnir!
